EEDS (performance)

The EEDS or Energy Efficiency Design summary has been a part of the Ontario Building Code since its introduction in 2012. This section focus’ on the Performance EEDS, if you need a Prescriptive EEDS please click here for more information.

The Performance Path EEDS is for builds that are going to break with the building code in some way. The most popular reason we’ve found to date has been because the window to wall ratio is above 22%, but other popular reasons can be removal of the drain water heat recovery or how the wall assembly is being built.

The performance path requires the creation of two energy models of your home by a registered energy advisor, that is registered and in good standing with Natural Resources Canada. One model would be the home, if it were being built according to one of the insulation packages listed in section SB-12 of the building code. The second energy model is your home as you’d like to build it. On this form you’ll be required to list the energy rating for both models, and the rating for your home as you’d like to build it must be equal to or less then the energy rating of the house as if it were built according to the building code.

This may require the upgrading of items like insulation, the windows or the mechanical equipment. As a Service Organization licensed by Natural Resources Canada, Efficient Home has registered energy advisors to be able to help you complete your Performance EEDS. If this service is partnered with the mechanical design for your home, we can help you with both designs at once and help guide you to making the best choices for both the efficiency of your home as well as home comfort.
